Patient Spotlight: David Cole
Q: Why did you choose the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center to partner with you on this journey?
A: My family and I researched surgeons at UAB who could perform the procedures I might possibly need for my condition. My oncologist happened to mention Jamie Cannon, MD, who had been researched as an option for my needs.
Q: What has been the most challenging part of your experience?
A: It has been a challenge for me to adapt to the post-surgery urological setbacks brought on after having the robotic abdominoperineal resection (colostomy) procedure.
Q: What is the biggest win you’re excited to share?
A: I am excited to share how easy it has been to adjust to having a colostomy. After only two months since having my surgery, I am relieved at how easy it is to care for my ostomy site. I am beginning to be able to enjoy activities again with little to no interference.
Q: What is a fun fact that not many people know about you?
A: Not many people know that I really enjoy reading about history and visiting historical sites.
Q: What is your favorite hobby?
A: I enjoy deer hunting and knife collecting. This was the first time in 54 years that I was unable to go hunting.
Q: What is the next place on your travel bucket list?
A: I would really like to visit Yellowstone National Park or the Grand Canyon. Just sitting on the beach would be nice, too.
Q: What is your favorite TV show?
A: “Longmire”
Q: What is your favorite quote to live by?
A: “Live each day to the fullest” and the Golden Rule are two of my favorite quotes.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do in the Magic City?
A: I like to eat at Firebirds with my family.
Q: What advice would you give to those just beginning their cancer journey?
A: I would advise them to follow their doctor’s instructions and keep a positive attitude about their condition.
Q: Is there anyone at the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center whom you would like to recognize?
A: I would like to recognize Jamie Cannon, MD, as a valuable member of the Cancer Center.
Q: Was there anything in particular that helped you through the emotional and mental challenges that cancer brought to your life?
A: My family has been very supportive in helping me through the challenges I faced during my cancer journey. I also appreciate the doctors and nurses who explained everything to me throughout this process.
