Graduate Education & Training
The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center works closely with the UAB Cancer Biology Graduate Program to train the next generation of cancer biologists to make significant contributions to fundamental, clinical, and translational discoveries. This partnership allows graduate students to not only work closely with expert faculty mentors using diverse approaches in their cancer research focus, but also gives them access to state-of-the-art equipment in collaborative research and clinical environments.
Students joining the Cancer Biology Theme train in broad based, integrating molecular, cellular, biochemical, and biological experimental approaches. For a customized dissertation experience, students are offered broad and focused advanced courses, seminars, discussions and hands-on research opportunities in areas of tumor microenvironment, metastasis, cancer genetics, stem cells, gene therapy of cancer, pharmacology/toxicology, bioinformatics, signaling and tumor immunology.
O’Neal NextGen Predoctoral Scholar Awards
The purpose of the O’Neal NextGen Predoctoral Scholar Awards is to enable promising predoctoral students to obtain mentored cancer research training from O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center faculty advisors.
The proposed mentored research training must reflect the applicant’s dissertation research project and is expected to enhance the individual’s potential to develop into a productive, independent cancer researcher.
