Healing Movement exercise program supports patients and others affected by cancer

Healing Movement is a new, virtual exercise program from the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center that offers a safe way to maintain fitness. This free Zoom class is led by an exercise physiologist who specializes in oncology (cancer care), and it is designed to help people with cancer, caregivers, and patients in any phase of survivorship.

Cancer treatment and recovery can make it challenging to move and exercise regularly. Many people understand how important exercise is for preventing illness, but research also shows that exercise can increase a person’s tolerance for cancer treatment, which helps them stay on schedule and recover faster.

Often, the challenge is finding a way to stick to a routine and choosing safe exercises. That’s why the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center has an exercise physiologist on staff who is dedicated to exercise for survivors.

Exercise physiologist Sara Mansfield, MS, works with individual patients by referral for their unique needs. In October 2024, she launched Healing Movement as a general class open to anyone affected by cancer.

“This is about creating a space where patients can move safely, build confidence, and feel supported,” Mansfield said. “You don’t have to lift heavy weights or run. There’s always a way to access movement – you just need the right tools and guidance.”

Class structure

The classes last 30-40 minutes and are held virtually over Zoom. They focus on strength, flexibility, and mindfulness about everyday movements. “We focus on practical things like getting out of a chair, improving balance, or walking with more confidence,” Mansfield said. “And small adjustments can make a big difference”.

Healing Movement classes are offered four days a week, and participants are encouraged to join whenever they are able. No experience is necessary, and if you miss a class, you’ll never get left behind. Click here to register.

The Zoom format makes it easier to show up for class yet still allows for customized instruction and feedback. “Some people worry about others watching them at first or not knowing how to start, but this is a no-pressure environment,” Mansfield said. “Being all together on camera helps with confidence and camaraderie.”

Each class usually includes:

  • Warmups: Classes begin with light movements and deep breathing, to ease participants into activity.
  • Focus areas: Each session emphasizes a specific goal, such as balance, leg strength, or cardiovascular health.
  • Guidance and feedback: Mansfield provides immediate feedback and safety tips during the session, helping participants refine their movements and avoid discomfort.
  • Educational and interactive session

Education and motivation

Healing Movement is more than an exercise class. It’s also an opportunity to learn about the connection between movements as part of a healthy lifestyle. Mansfield ensures that each session includes an educational element, such as the importance of pacing, proper posture, or how to safely adapt exercises to your needs.

“The goal is to help participants build skills and knowledge they can use on their own in everyday life,” Mansfield said.

Caregivers encouraged to join

Caregivers and family members are encouraged to join the class for their own benefit as well as their loved one. They can help monitor form, keep their loved one accountable, and make it more fun. “Caregivers can help the movements become part of an ongoing healthy lifestyle,” Mansfield said.

Community

“Whether or not you gravitate to membership groups, engaging with our casual community can help you succeed,” Mansfield said. “So many experiences are represented in our group that you will always have support, advice, and reassurance.”

Many survivors tell Mansfield they would have benefited from starting a regular routine earlier in their journey. “It’s never too soon or too late to move for wellness,” she said.

Ready to move?

“You don’t need to wait on a referral to take advantage of our class,” Mansfield said. “This is about building momentum. Starting now can make a real difference in how you feel and manage future challenges.”
